Lot Essay

With the advancement of glass cutting techniques and manufacturing during the first quarter of the nineteenth century, combining clear or colored cut glass with ormolu became a fashionable trend in France under the reign of Charles X. At this time, cut glass clock cases of various Neoclassical shapes, such as lyres and urns, were mounted with stylish gilt bronze mounts to create exquisite jewel-like objects. Clear glass was more commonly used and a number of clocks made of this material are preserved in the Spanish Royal Collections, see J. R. Colon de Carvajal, Catálogo del Rejoles del Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid, 1987, p. 172, nos. 150 and 151, and p. 230, nos. 213 and 214. Rarer, blue glass examples, are illustrated ibid., p. 307, no. 295 and p. 324, no. 313. A clock identical to the present lot was sold Christie’s, London, 10 February 2022, lot 185.
