A FLEMISH EXOTIC LARGE-LEAF VERDURE TAPESTRY FRAGMENT
The present lot relates to a lineage of the Medieval North European depictions of the 'Wild Man'. A kind of mythical figure, he represented the uncivilized and un-Christian forest dweller who could control animals and lived outside of the constraints of society (see Bernheimer, Wild Men in the Middle Ages, 1952). Oft depicted in German tapestries, the wild man was typically clothed in furs and bore a club and a shield, such as in the present lot (see Buri and Stucky-Schürer, Zahm und Wild, p. 52).
