Lot Essay

The design of this commode is after an eighteenth-century model attributed to Bernard II Van Risen Burgh (B.V.R.B.), who was known for his use of lacquer often salvaged from Japanese screens or boxes. An example by B.V.R.B. with lacquer panels and made circa 1760-65 was given to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as part of the John Jones bequest in 1882 (inv. 1094-1882), and a copy by Maxime Secretant date 1918 is illustrated C. Payne, Paris Furniture: The luxury market of the 19th century, 2018, p. 151. Alfred Beurdeley, François Linke and Paul Sormani were certainly inspired by the eighteenth-century lacquer example, and all have created notable copies of this commode in wooden marquetry.
