A FRENCH ORMOLU-MOUNTED KINGWOOD AND TULIPWOOD MARQUETRY COMMODE
The design of this commode is after an eighteenth-century model attributed to Bernard II Van Risen Burgh (B.V.R.B.), who was known for his use of lacquer often salvaged from Japanese screens or boxes. An example by B.V.R.B. with lacquer panels and made circa 1760-65 was given to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as part of the John Jones bequest in 1882 (inv. 1094-1882), and a copy by Maxime Secretant date 1918 is illustrated C. Payne, Paris Furniture: The luxury market of the 19th century, 2018, p. 151. Alfred Beurdeley, François Linke and Paul Sormani were certainly inspired by the eighteenth-century lacquer example, and all have created notable copies of this commode in wooden marquetry.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Overall in good, sound condition and ready to place. With typical scattered light nicks, faint marks, and some surface scratches. With some very minor age and construction cracks, as to be expected. The veneers with some minor flaking and some small losses including to the upper edge of the top drawer, which is largely covered by the overhang of the marble top and not readily visible, and with some small spliced repairs. With some minor areas of associated infill and overpaint, slightly discolored over time, primarily to the back legs. The left side of the commode with a small area of lifting to the veneer. The upper section of the drawer with some surface wear and a small dent, only visible when the drawer is open. Similarly, with some minor wear to the commode where the mounts on the ends of the drawers rest, not visible when closed. The mounts with typical light rubbing and tarnish, and with some verdigris, mostly to the sabots. The marble top with natural inclusions and some minor ‘nibbles’ to the extreme edges. The back corner with a small restored break, only visible from the reverse. With some areas of infill along the outer edge, primarily to the front corners. Presents very well overall.
