Lot Essay

The iridescently-patinated peacock is intended to resemble Japanese metalworks known as mokume. Similar designs incorporating this technique are repeated throughout Eugène Cornu's oeuvre, particularly a number of onyx guéridons of either peacock or crane-form, such as two sold at Christie's, London, 23 September 2010, lots 75 and 76. A vase of this form was sold at Christie’s, London, 24 May 2018, lot 609.
