Lot Essay

Rococo style pierced cake baskets, which served as the model for the present lot, were a staple product of gold and silversmiths of the 1730s through the 1750s. A nearly identical example by William Cripps dated 1743 is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (Acc. No. M.292-1976). Another silver example of this model by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company dated 1928 was sold at Christie's, New York, 5 April 2022, lot 303.
