Lot Essay

This austere interpretation of a neoclassical temple was likely inspired by the goût anglais that was often looked at by Viennese and German clockmakers in the early 19th century. A case such as the one here was built to house a small watch and typically kept by the bedside (see A. Wilkie, Biedermeier Furniture, New York, 1987, pp. 180-181).
