Lot Essay

This well-carved Irish pier mirror embodies the timeless elegance of the George II style. Possibly crafted by the esteemed cabinet-making firm Hicks of Dublin, it stands as a remarkable testament to the enduring legacy of Georgian design, skillfully reinterpreted in the mid-19th century.

William Hicks (fl.1882) was recorded as a cabinetmaker with premises at Upper Abbey Street, Dublin, Ireland. Hicks displayed a writing table of Irish yew, inlaid with satinwood, and in the style of Chippendale at the 1882 Dublin Exhibition (The Furniture Gazette, 16 September 1882). The firm specialized in high quality pieces in the styles of Sheraton, Hepplewhite, Chippendale as well as other prominent 18th century makers.
