Lot Essay

From the 17th through the mid-19th century, it was a tradition for young men of noble and wealthy families to make a 'Grand Tour' of historic centers in Europe in the search of an education in antique and modern culture. During this journey it was the tradition to buy or commission souvenirs of exquisite quality, often reproductions of the antiquities in colored marbles, that one could display back home. The demand for marmorari, or marble workers, increased and were met by celebrated Roman and Venetian workshops like that of Righetti, Raffaelli and Boschetti. Benedetto Boschetti , a 'virtuoso' of marmorari favored materials like Numidian Giallo antico (from Tunisia) and the Capo Tenaro Rosso Antico, two colors already traditionally associated with the arts of Rome. This lot was designed after the famous oil lamp by Benedetto Boschetti. Active circa 1820-1870, the Boschetti workshop exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851 and was renowned for the exceptional quality of its copies after the 'Antique'. An important example attributed to Boschetti was sold 20 April, 2018, lot 1. A further example of this extraordinary oil lamp in giallo antico is in the Mario Praz Museum in Rome.
