Lot Essay

Similarly to the preceding lot in this sale, this model of a temple was possibly originally part of a deser, or surtout de table. It is also possible that it was intended to be used on its own as a centrotavola and was marketed to Grand Tourists. Similarly to the urns in this sale, this tempietto's design and the materials used relate it to the oeuvre of the Valadier workshop. The Valadier workshop was well known for its extravagant deser creations, such as the one illustrated in A. Gonzáles-Palacios, Luigi Valadier, New York, 2018, p. 181. Such deser always incorporated architectural elements such as triumphal arches, temples, obelisks, and colonnades, all in rich hardstones, often embellished with gilt bronze. See Sotheby's, London, 6 July 2011, lot 28.
