Lot Essay

Pierre Fléchy, maître in 1756.

Pierre Flechy (1715-1769) was one of the many ébénistes working in the busy environs of the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine. Fléchy specialized in marquetry of large flowers in bois-clair which covered the entire surface of commodes, secretaires and bureaux. But the maître ébéniste was also influenced by the chinoiserie fashion and also created pieces in lacquer, such as the present lot. For a pair of his red lacquer encoignures see Christie’s, London, 1 April 2009 lot 111, and for an elegant black lacquer commode see Christie’s, Paris, 18 April 2019, lot 55.
