Lot Essay

A slightly larger example of the present model is illustrated in G. Godden, The Illustrated Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone China, London, 1971, pl. 55. Godden notes that a miniature version of this model measuring only one-foot in height, is held in the collection of the Stoke Museum. The large printed marks to the backs of the columns incorporate the coat-of-arms used by the United Kingdom until Queen Victoria's ascension in 1837, and were used by Mason & Co. through the 1840s, appearing exclusively on chimney-pieces.
