The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The whole 393⁄4 in. (101 cm.) high, 581⁄2 in. (148.6 cm.) wide, 111⁄2 in. (29.2 cm.) deep.
Overall with some scattered small scratches, wear, restorations, flakes to the decoration, chips and plaster/putty residue, consistent with age, use and previous installation. A fine network of crazing to the glaze throughout. The decoration throughout with various degrees of wear and loss, consistent with use, and refreshed in areas. The downward-facing areas (the surfaces previously exposed to fire) with some of the crazing more stained than at some other areas, most likely due to contact with smoke. Some intrinsic imperfections, in the making, including occasional dark kiln specks in the glaze and periodic gaps or misalignment of repeating patterns in the printed decoration.
Further condition details for each component enumerated below:
The left section of the mantel: a large flat chip to the underside at the back (approx. 4 in. long, 1 in. wide), probably from previous deinstallation, not visible when the fire-surround is assembled; two small dark accretions (each approx. 1 in long, 3⁄4 in. wide) along the back edge of the top.
The central section of the mantel: a few small chips around the edges; two small restored chips (each approx. 1 in long, 1 in. wide) along the back edge of the top; some staining to the central panel.
The right section of the mantel: previously in several large pieces and repaired, a few small related chips along the back upper edge and a fair amount of associated touch-up to the decoration at the top, the gilt keyfret band at the side and the floral band beneath it each entirely repainted.
The component spanning the columns (supporting the center of the mantel): some small chips and restorations around the edges; a small area of restoration to the lower edge of the right-hand side of the central scroll; each end of the front face with some black marks; the back upper edge of the top (not visible when the fire-surround is assembled) with some large chips.
The columns: each previously in large pieces and repaired, the repair lines visible across the visible by the sections of touch-up/overpainting, and across the backs (not visible when the fire-surround is assembled) as darker lines; the column on the right with two visible cracks across the front with some associated tiny losses; the upper back edges (not visible when the fire-surround is assembled) each with large chips; the column bases each with the decoration fully refreshed, some of the overpaint flaking around the edges.
