A grand and attractive pair of tables. The Siena marble tops are of a later date as stated in the cataloguing, and have scattered small chips and nicks throughout, most notably to the edges commensurate with use. The tables' cross braces have been lowered to accommodate the later tops. The bases were probably originally carved and painted, and have been later gilt, and this explains the later plugged holes to the backs of the legs where they would have been affixed to the workbench by the woodcarver. Faint carving is visible to the backs of the back legs on one table, and to one of the back legs on the other table which is an indicator that this was likely done in a workshop 'assembly line'. There are scattered chips and small losses to the gilding revealing bare wood, bole, and gesso in places throughout, and visible in the catalogue images. The carved swages have repaired breaks and have been later reinforced to the backs in places. The back angle brackets are later.
