Lot Essay

The highly asymmetrical crestings of these mirrors reflect the capriciousness of the German Rococo at its height in the middle of the eighteenth century. The carved decoration of this lot is closely related to the inventive and elaborate stucco and boiserie decorations that are typical to princely interiors in Germany in the 1700s. The combination of cream and polychrome decoration enhanced with gilding, as well as the pine and poplar used in the manufacturing of this lot, suggests one of the German principalities as the place of origin of these mirrors, such as Bavaria or Franconia.
