Lot Essay

Other examples of this chair have previously been connected to the Royal Palace of Caserta, just north of Naples (see Valentino Brosio, Mobili dell' Ottocento, Milan, 1962, p. 53). The Reggia di Caserta is a massive, sprawling palace designed for King Charles of Bourbon in 1752 by Luigi Vanvitelli. After conquering the kingdom of Naples in 1734, Charles commissioned Caserta to rival Versailles and the Royal Palace in Madrid. The magnificent complex and gardens expand across 11 acres and comprises around 1,200 rooms. An identical example can be also found at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (accession number 08.51.18).
