Lot Essay

Frederick Duke of York (1763-1827), Commander in Chief of the British army and immortalized in song as 'The Grand Old Duke of York...', was the second son of King George III. In 1791 he became the son-in-law of Freidrich Wilhelm II of Prussia when he married Princess Frederica of Prussia. A dessert plate from this service was sold at Christie's, London, 1 May 2002, lot 112.
