Lot Essay

These charming mosaics, each of fine execution and likely intented for jewelry or snuffboxes, are related to examples produced during the beginning of the 19th century. A similar work of a tripod incense burner by the pre-eminent mosaicist, Giacomo Raffaelli, dated 1792, is illustrated in R. Grieco & A. Gambino, Roman Micromosaic: l'Arte del micromosaico fra '700 e '800, 2001, p. 93. This motif appears again in works by Nicola de Vecchis, circa 1795-1800, including on a pair of vases in the Gilbert Collection, now in the V&A (GILBERT.110-2008).
