Lot Essay

The present model is a reduction of a life-size example currently preserved at Château de Chantilly. The original - one of a pair of hound groups – was commissioned by Henri d’Orléans, duc d’Aumale (1822-1897), fifth son of Queen Marie-Amélie and King Louis-Philippe, an avid hunter who hosted many of the grand French royal chases of the 19th century. The inverted triangle is the identifying mark of the royal pack of hounds and it can be seen on the Chantilly couple and this model.
