Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste-Gustave Deloye was born in 1838 in the commune of Sedan in the Northeast of France. He moved to Paris in 1858 to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, winning a mention in the Prix de Rome in 1861, and second grand prize in 1862. Deloye first exhibited at the Salon of 1863, and continued to exhibit over the years winning a third class medal in 1887 and a bronze at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. One of his most important works is the Garibaldi monument in Nice, inaugurated in 1891. Deloye passed away in Paris in 1899, and was buried in the commune of l'Etang-la-Ville.
