Lot Essay

Of monumental scale, these finely cast, impressive figural candelabra perfectly encapsulate the fashion for monumental interior lighting in the second half of the 19th century. Though unmarked, the casting and chasing are of excellent quality, indicative of the finest fondeurs of this period such as Denière, Graux-Marly and Barbedienne. A pair of candelabra, surmounting nearly identical bases to the present lot, sold Christie’s, London, 18 September 2014, lot 138 (£92,500).
