Joseph Karl Stieler (German, 1781-1858)

Stieler was a painter for the Bavarian court and the present portraits were commissioned by King Ludwig I for the Schönheitengalerie, often referred to as the 'Gallery of Beauties', in Schloss Nymphenburg. Additionally, Stieler's portrait of Beethoven remains the archetypal image of that famous composer.
