The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Overall presents attractively.
The canvas:
Oil on canvas, relined.
There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface.
To the bottom right corner there is a right angle tear in the canvas, visible in the catalogue illustration, this requires consolidation.
Some paint thinning, especially to the darker tones.
There is a some scattered restoration visible to the naked eye, especially evident in the sky.
Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned restoration.
Further examination is obscured by a thick layer of old varnish.
The frame:
Overall there is some marks, nicks, scratches, small losses and repairs as to be expected with age and use.
The frame probably regilt, but the majority of the cut gesso decoration appears contemporary. Please note detailed gilding analysis has not been undertaken.
The gilding has worn to a nice mellow tone. There is some rubbing and chipped losses to the gilding, revealing the gesso below. See in particular, the lower edge of the frame.
The carving flanking the lower part of the frame, appears to be original and was previously applied with candle sconces, now removed, the place where these attached has been later gilt.
The acorn pendants to the upper sides of the frame are associated.
The brackets now applied to the top edge of the frame are apparently contemporary and were probably originally applied to the sides of the upper part of the frame, where the acorn pendants now hang.
The top of the frame possibly originally with other cresting but this is not conclusive.
There are two vacant screw holes flanking the upper corners of the mirror section where the lower part of the frame has been secured to the wall at some time
The backboards are replaced.
Some carved elements are slightly loose and there are some minor losses to small carved elements.
The glass:
The colour of the glass is good however the plates seem relatively thick and most likely a good old replacement.
The silvering with some discolouration and minor areas of loss and damp staining creating an attractive soft grey tone.
The plates are bevelled.
