The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This mirror is in 'country house condition' with the inevitable small chips, cracks, small losses and repairs.
As stated in the catalogue, the mirror has been re-gilded and the present gilding is probably nineteenth century, with chips and losses, revealing the gesso, bole and wood below.
The surface is rubbed and worn, particularly on the beading around the plate, revealing the gesso and bole in areas.
The peripheral carving, was probably originally fixed directly to the wall and has now been attached to a later vertical gilded baton. The oval patera is probably contemporary to the baton.
The wooden backboards are replaced, and there are closely placed pinholes around the plate suggesting a hessian cloth.
The peripheral carving is backed with yellow washed hessian.
