cartouche-shaped box, the sablé cover centred with a silver-mounted paste-set crowned cypher 'A' for Albert (1820-1902), King of Saxony (1873-1902), on a shaped translucent blue enamel reserve within enamelled foliate motifs, with six silver-mounted paste stones on each side, the lobed sides and base engraved with strapwork and foliage, slightly raised enamelled scroll thumbpiece, the interior with a manuscript label inscribed 'Gold snuff-box given to my / father George Edward Cokayne / by Albert King of Saxony in 1882 / on his investiture with the Garter'

Lot Essay

Albert (1828-1902) was the King of Saxony and a member of the House of Wettin. He was the eldest son of Prince John and his wife Amalie Auguste of Bavaria. Prince John succeeded his brother Frederick Augustus II on the Saxon throne as King John in 1854. Albert had a successful military career leading Saxon troops that participated in the First Schleswig War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. Carl Martin Weishaupt was established as a goldsmith in Hanau in 1801 and from 1837 onwards the firm was registered as C.M.Weishaupt und Söhne.
