Lot Essay

A master of both the fine and decorative arts, Carrier-Belleuse is known to have adapated his designs to various ornamental forms. This is most clearly illustated in his publication of two-hundred drawings in his book Application de la figure humaine à la décoration et à l'ornementation industrielles (1884). Produced to provide models and inspiration for artists working in the applied arts, it is almost certain that the present torchère is derived from these designs. Comparre plate 45, an illustration of a fountain, which with its putto standing contrapposto supporting the weight of the vessel above his head is nearly the identical composition of the present lot, mirrored.
