The Spanish government, Spanish royal family and the Vatican were among the numerous patrons of the atelier who commissioned carpets of richly saturated colour and exuberant design to adorn their palaces and private residences from the early 18th century. Founded by Philip V (1683-1746) in 1721, Jacobo van der Gotem, was appointed to run the workshop.
