For a similar casting bottle also by Andre Pace dated circa1650 see the one held at the Victoria and Albert Museum engraved with the arms of the Jean Paul Lascaris castellar, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, 1636-1657 and considered to be the oldest piece of Maltese silver.
Perfume bottles such as this with a pierced inset in the neck are called casting bottles as they were used to sprinkle scented water and often took the shape of pilgrim bottle used to carry water when travelling (V. F. Denaro, The goldsmiths of Malta and their marks, Florence, 1972, p. 76).
