Lot Essay
The term 'sylphide', derived from the mythological 'sylph' or spirit of the air, connotes a graceful and slender female figure often associated with ballet dancers. With the lithe figure perched delicately on the edge of the fountain, the prolific 19th century sculptor Moreau perfectly encapsulates that essence in the present model. Another example of this model sold Christie's, New York, 21 October 2015, lot 6 ($8,125).

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This bronze is in overall very good decorative order. The patinated surface with some light surface scratches and small, localised areas of a darker tone and speckling, predominantly to the figure's proper right leg. The hardstone urn apparently free from breaks, with only the expected minor 'nibbled' chips to a few edges. The base with a well-restored small break to the back left corner and faint, short, hairline crack to the front left corner, both only visible upon close examination. Ready to place.
