A PAIR OF LARGE CHINESE GILT-BRONZE AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL BUDDHIST LIONS
Foo dogs, also known as Imperial guardian lions or Shishi, are traditionally thought to protect a building from harmful spirits and people that might be a threat. A similar pair of cloisonné example of the same date sold Christie’s, London, 14 November 2018, lot 641 (£45,000).

These lions are in overall good and decorative condition. The enamel with some surface scratches, as well as some small chips and nicks, as to be expected with age and handling. The gilt-bronze with ares of tarnish and verdigirs, particularly to the front of example with the lion holding the ball. The other with possible minor area of restoration to back top edge behind the lion's tail and probably lacking a loop to the chain suspended from the lion's collar. The lions affixed to their bases. Ready to place.
