Lot Essay
This finely carved marble is characteristic of the type of decorative sculpture produced in Italy during the second half of the nineteenth century. Like many of his contemporaries, Pietro Barzanti set up his own gallery to retail high quality copies of Antique sculpture and contemporary subjects, such as the present lot, to satisfy the demands of a healthy export market primarily in England and America.
