Lot Essay

The design for this giltwood pier glass is probably derived from an engraving by Daniel Marot (1661-1752) published as the title page to his Nouveaux Livre d'Orfèvrerie in circa 1701-1703. Marot was, in turn, undoubtedly influenced by the French mannerist designer and engraver, Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682), as can be seen in a plate from the latter’s Grotesques et Moresques series, made after 1634 but before 1667; a copy of which is in the Rijksmuseum (Orn Cat II 902). Both images feature the theatrical baldequin draped with swags, a motif that Le Pautre was to use in another series of designs, the Alcoves a la Romaine series (Orn Cat II 8893). Other German Baroque mirrors perhaps inspired by Marot and sold in these rooms include: a pair of giltwood mirrors, sold ‘A House on the Wiltshire Downs’, Christie’s, London, 6 March 2008, lot 20 (£60,500 inc. premium), and a single mirror, sold Christie’s, New York, 7 October 2008, lot 214 ($23,750 inc. premium).
