Lot Essay

This daybed is modelled on a Regency daybed, an example of which is illustrated in R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, Woodbridge, 1954,vol. II, p. 145, fig. 25, where it is described as 'Grecian', reflecting the Regency fashion for the neo-Grec style which resonated among patrons such as the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and his immediate circle. A similar daybed was acquired for the Royal Pavilion at Brighton to honour its Director Clifford Musgrave (1904-1982) (E.T. Joy, English Furniture 1800-1851, London, 1977, p. 92). Another Regency daybed sold Christie's, New York, 18-19 April 2012, lot 337 ($20,000 inc. premium).
