Lot Essay

Eugène-Louis Sieffert is recorded as a painter at Sèvres between 1881-1887 and 1894-1898. See Marie-Nöelle Pinot de Villechenon, Sèvres Porcelain from the Sèvres Museum 1740 to the Present Day, London, 1997, p. 90 for an uncovered example decorated in pâte-sur-pâte by Gély. For the same example also see Marcelle Brunet and Tamara Préaud, Sèvres des origines à nos jours, Fribourg, 1978, p. 271, pl. LXX. The form of the present lot is based on a Renaissance rock-crystal vase made in Milan and now in the Gallerie d'Apollon in the Louvre, Paris (museum no. MR 281).
