Lot Essay

Stephen Wright was first employed as assistant to William Kent and continued to adopt his style following his death. His most notable patrons were the Dukes of Newcastle; Thomas Pelham-Holles (d. 1768) and later his brother, Henry Pelham (d. 1754). Thomas Pelham-Holles was also the chancellor of Cambridge University which led to Wright’s greatest accomplishment, the Cambridge library, which manifests the approach of William Kent through its Palladian composition. Wright worked in the Gothic, Palladian and Neo-Classical styles, following Kent's example, as these drawings attest.
