AN EMPIRE SILVER-GILT TEA CADDY, MARK OF JEAN-BAPTISTE-CLAUDE ODIOT, PARIS, 1809-1819
Plain rectangular resembling a plinth, the base with stiff leaf border, the sides applied with a figure of Bacchus astride a panther on one side and Mercury astride a lion on the other, and ewers on the small sides, applied below the rim with band of winged griffins and masks above, the sliding cover with kneeling Bacchanalian infant finial, marked underneath: maker, guarantee and stamped signature
: J. BTE. CDE. ODIOT (in a rectangle) ; inside: maker

The ornaments of this tea caddy, typical of the Empire style, were inspired by Bernard de Montfaucon's drawings published in 1719 in "L'antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures". The Cupid playing the lyre on a lion entitled "L'Amour triomphant de la Force" (Love triumphing over Strength) appears on plate 115.These drawings were to have a major influence on Odiot, who incorporated them into his decorative vocabulary from 1800 onwards and used them on a variety of objects such as glass coolers, tea fountains, teapots and tea caddies, including one dated 1819-1838 similar to ours, now in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The kneeling Bacchus finial is found on a covered sugar bowl by Odiot dated 1809-1819 in the Victoria and Albert Museum and on a pair of wine cooler by Odiot from the Demidoff service in the Love collection, illustrated in "Les Arts sous Napoléon"", 1978, fig. 31.
