The royal seal is an official seal affixed to important documents to authenticate them and show that they have been approved by the monarch. Royal seals were also used to authenticate the monarch's private and personal documents, such as letters, wills and powers of attorney.Under the Ancien Régime, the 'audience du sceau' was a solemn session where the king's letters patent were verified and sealed before being sent to the baillages and sénéchaussées of the kingdom for registration. This session took place either at the King's residence or at the Chancellery, where the matrices of the royal seals were kept by the Chancellor, also known as the Keeper of the Seals.
Because seals were so important from a legal point of view, they were kept in a parchment pouch or in a wooden, metal or silver box to protect them.
