Square section, the part-wood stand on four curved feet, with pierced apron, fitted with detachable square lamp with detachable cover, the kettle with angular part-wood handle, curved spigot with wood tap and detachable cover with fluted finial, the body bright-cut engraved with a band of scroll foliage on a diaper ground, the lamp, apron, body and cover each engraved with the script initials 'FVZ', marked on apron and body, the lamp and covers unmarked

This square and plain shape of this kettle is reminiscent of 17th-century Japanese teapots as copied by Europeans. These shapes are borrowed from porcelain objects brought back by the Dutch East India Company, for whom the Germans worked during the Edo period (1603-1868).This kettle although very early in the 19th century seems to announce the Secession style, a modernist artistic movement that emerged at the end of the 19th century and was characterised by more geometric shapes, also strongly influenced by China and Japan and a precursor of Modernism.
