Alfred André (1839-1919) fut l'un des plus célèbres restaurateurs d'objets d'art de la seconde moitié du XIXème siècle en Europe. Il s'initia tout d'abord au métier d'orfèvre, créa son premier atelier parisien en 1859, et se spécialisa par la suite dans la restauration et rénovation d'objets du Moyen Age et de la Renaissance. L'atelier exerçait non seulement un travail de restauration sur de nombreux objets dans divers précieux matériaux mais aussi de reproduction d'anciennes pièces de collection et même de création dans le style Renaissance. Son succès et talent lui valurent de nombreuses et prestigieuses commandes et en 1885, il fut récompensé par la famille royale d'Espagne pour avoir restauré un coffret en cristal de roche qui se trouvait à l'Escorial, aujourd'hui conservé au Palacio Real de Madrid. André travailla également en étroite relation avec la famille Rothschild et le célèbre collectionneur Frédéric Spitzer.

Marks clear. Element now lacking from the base of stem: possibly as dog possibly. Some elements later: probably the scrolls around the base, the figure's halberd, the stem, the shell engraved border and the side scrolls and Venus Fortuna. Later gilding though underside not gilded. Light wear on high points and to gilding. The shell with spider cracks and old glue. Lead restoration to the back strap mid way. Solder repair at junction of Venus Fortuna and sphere with some light loss of gilding and bruise. Small section of the shell now lacking around the knight helm
