Le dessin de cette pendule peut être rapproché de celui de François Vion, maître en 1764, (voir H. Ottomeyer et P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, vol.I, Munich, 1986, p. 180, pl. 3.7.8), illustrant un dessin à la plume de l'atelier de François Vion de 1770 (conservé à la Bibliothèque Doucet, Paris). Une horloge presque identique avec un cheval patiné (op. cit. p. 180, pl. 3.7.7) fut vendue chez Sotheby's, Londres, 13 décembre 1974, lot 66, provenant de la collection de feu l'Honorable Lady Baillie.
La signature Gilles l'Ainé A Paris correspond soit à Pierre-Gilles l'Aîné, reçu maître en 1746 et actif rue Saint-Martin à Paris, ou bien à son fils, Pierre fils de l'Aîné puis Père, reçu également maître en 1746. Ce dernier travailla dans l'atelier de son père avant de s'établir pour son propre compte. Il créa des pendules de grande qualité en collaboration avec les meilleurs fondeurs et bronziers tels que Jean-Baptiste Osmond, Saint-Germain ou François Vion comme dans le cas de notre pendule.

The website illustrations are accurate. There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches and rubbing consistent with age and use. Dial : With some very minor hairline cracks especially near the '15' and '20'. Gilding : is slightly tarnished with some minor black stains especially to the drum-shaped case and to the base. Silver: Slightly rubbed and tarnished especially below the case. The seed of the top is associated. Marble : with a small restoration to the right front side and with minor chips to the edges as expected. With minor yellow stains. Painting : as stated in the catalogue, the painting of the medallion is very damaged. Please note that this condition report has been written from a work of art and not a time-measuring object point of view. Therefore this lot has to be checked by a professional clock-maker.
