Lot Essay

La colonne de Phocas, dite Columna Phocatis, a été élevée dans le Forum Romain au début du VIIe siècle en hommage à l'empereur byzantin Phocas. Elle s'y trouve toujours aujourd'hui.
Cette grande réduction rappelle la production d'objets liés au Grand Tour. Une paire similaire a fait partie de la vente Guinevere (Christie's, Londres, 19 mars 2013, lot 153).


The Column of Phocas, known as Columna Phocatis, was built in the Roman Forum at the beginning of the 7th century in honour of the Byzantine emperor Phocas. It is still there today.
This large reduction is reminiscent of the production of objects related to the Grand Tour. A similar pair was included in the Guinevere Sale (Christie's, London, 19 March 2013, lot 153).
