Victor Emmanuel (1820-1878), King of Sardinia and later First King of Italy, was the son of Charles Albert, King of Sardinia, and Thérèse, daughter of Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany. As King of Piedmont-Sardinia, he formed an alliance with France to defeat Austria and obtained territories in northern Italy. The initiator of major constitutional reforms, he also concluded trade treaties with England, established railways and encouraged free trade.

This snuff-box commemorates his visit to England, during which he was invited by the Corporation of London to a reception at the Guildhall. This English-style snuff-box was presented by the King to the Lord Mayor of the time, Sir David Salomons, the first Jewish mayor to be recognised for his fight for the emancipation of Jews in the United Kingdom.

Lot Essay
