Le palais Vorontsov situé à Saint-Pétersbourg a été construit par Bartolomeo Rastrelli pour le chancelier Mikhaïl Illarionovitch Vorontsov entre 1749 et 1757. Ce palais fût de 1839 à 1843 la résidence de Marie Nicolaïevna de Russie et sa famille, dont l'initiale ‘M’ sous une couronne impériale est gravée dans le couvercle. Marie Nicolaïevna (1819-1876), grande-duchesse de Russie, est la fille ainée de l'empereur Nicolas Ier de Russie et de l'impératrice Alexandra Feodorovna. En 1839 elle épouse le duc Maximilien de Leuchtenberg (1817-1852), fils d'Eugène de Beauharnais, duc de Leuchtenberg, et de la princesse Augusta-Amélie de Bavière.
