Lot Essay

Folio cabinets such as this were popular and practical items for connoisseurs and country-house libraries in the 19th century. A related design featured in Messrs. Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book (ESB 344/102), no. 3671, 19 July 1828, a `portfolio stand', and another design, no. 5106, August 1836, a 'Pedestal portfolio stand' illustrated this type of tray-fitted library cabinet and noted its manufacturing cost as £13.2.6. Amongst related examples was one supplied to Thomas Langford-Brooke (d. 1815) for the library at Mere Hall, Cheshire, sold Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 196 (£32,200 including premium) and another for the library at Tatton Park, Cheshire. Another was sold from the collection of Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas Stanley, Chieveley House, Berks, Christie's, London, 19 March 2020, lot 24 (£30,000 including premium).
