Lot Essay

Edwin Whitney-Smith (1880-1952) studied sculpture at Bath and Bristol art schools and in his early career exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy. His sitters included Ernest Bevin, Mrs S. A. Courtauld and Sir Alfred Munnings. The current lot is a 1941 version of ‘The Waking Child’ which was shown at the Royal Academy in 1920 and acquired by the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull. A 1920s photograph of Whitney-Smith in his studio with is held in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG x194201).
