Lot Essay

The scene on this tile panel depicts the flight from Catania following the 1669 eruption of Mount Etna after an engraving by Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706), from Description de L'Univers, published in Paris in 1683. This scene of Mount Etna was fig. CXXIII, titled 'Mont Gibel'.
