Lot Essay

Immortalised as Lord Merlin in Nancy Mitford's semi-fictional novel The Pursuit of Love, Lord Berners (1883-1950) was a composer, painter, diplomat, writer and celebrated eccentric. His Palladian villa in Oxfordshire, Faringdon House was in its heyday photographed by Cecil Beaton and played host to an array of artistic and society figures including the Mitfords, Stravinsky, Dali and Gertrude Stein. The house contained a suitably diverse collection of pictures and furniture inherited and acquired by Lord Berners over his lifetime.
