Lot Essay

Pale grey marble veined in white was commonly used in Holland for the tops of French-style furniture in the second half of the 18th century. As with the present lot, many of these tops would have a simply canted and moulded edge. A transitional commode with a similar top made in Amsterdam is illustrated Reinier Baarsen, Paris 1650-1900 Decorative Arts in the Rijksmuseum, Rijksmuseum, 2013, p.337.
