Pale grey marble veined in white was commonly used in Holland for the tops of French-style furniture in the second half of the 18th century. As with the present lot, many of these tops would have a simply canted and moulded edge. A transitional commode with a similar top made in Amsterdam is illustrated Reinier Baarsen, Paris 1650-1900 Decorative Arts in the Rijksmuseum, Rijksmuseum, 2013, p.337.

This commode is in country house condition. There are the inevitable marks, dents and shrinkage cracks consistent with age and use. The marble top is in good condition and there is a minor chip to the underside of the moulding to the front left. There are losses and marks to the veneers throughout, particularly to the banding by the lower right ring handle (missing section present but detached), the lower right of the apron, and to the lower right of the upper escutcheon. The veneers are somewhat dry and have some surface dirt and would benefit from some professional cleaning. There are two large losses to the veneer on the top inside of the lower drawer, not visible from the exterior. There are some extensive minor cracks and lifting to the veneers, consistent with age. There is a significant crack to the faux fluting inlay on the back right angle. The floor of the lower drawer has separated slightly from the sides and is lower than its initial position. The mounts are original though they are significantly tarnished in places. There is major tarnishing to the gilding of the sabots.
