The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This commode is in fair overall overall condition and structurally sound. The decoration overall with the inevitable wear, rubbing, scratches and areas of discolouration consistent with age and use. Rubbing in particular to the gilt highpoints revealing the red ground beneath. With craquelure, chips and losses throughout, notably to the japanned borders and legs, which also have some areas of retouching. Some shrinkage splits along the lines of construction and with resultant chips and losses. Some losses tot he built-up leaves and petals on one side panel. Some losses to the veneers which edge the top of the drawers as well as the oak veneers to the inside of the drawer fronts. Three legs repaired. As catalogued, the mounts replaced, probably in the 19th century. The mounts re-gilt and with rubbing, wear and tarnishing. The marble top with chips to the extremities, a few indentations and infill to the surface, a replacement to the back left corner and a repair to the back right corner. The backboards have been slightly scrubbed. The top drawer with inventory label numbered 'K377A/DEC0140',
