Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Overall in good decorative order with some rubbing and wear to the gilding and enamels throughout as to be expected with age. Some small scattered chips throughout and areas of restoration.
The example with the scene of Christ's birth: The top section with some small firing cracks to the interior of the nozzle, and a small 0.5 cm flat chip to the interior edge of the rim. The second section with restoration to upper and lower hexagonal sections which has been sprayed to conceal the damage, with some associated re-gliding and three very small flat chips to the scroll moulding. The third section with some small firing cracks, and with a small, faint 1.5 cm hairline crack running up from the bottom. The bottom section with all three feet broken through and restored which has been sprayed to conceal the damage and with some associated re-gilding. Two acanthus leaf scroll tips restored and probably replacements. Some restoration to the three corners behind the acanthus leaves and to the upper section between two shells, propably to disguise breaks or cracks. Also with some small firing cracks, though these have been present since the time of manufacture.
The example with the scene of the flight into Egypt: The uppermost section with a crescent-shaped 1 cm flat chip to the rim, and a minor firing crack. The second section with some restoration to the lower hexagonal part where it joins the third section with some overpainting and regilding, and a few minute glaze chips. The third section in good order. The bottom section with some overpainting to the hexagonal upper section. Two feet broken through and restored, and the other with some restored chipping. Restoration with associated spray and re-gilding to all three corners behind the acanthus leaves with further restoration to the frames of two of the painted panels. One painted panel with some overpainting to the upper part. Restoration to all three acanthus leaf scroll tips. Some minor firing cracks though these have been present since the time of manufacture.
